Many of my clients, no matter their level in their respective organizations, come to coaching wanting to develop or enhance what is called executive presence. Although difficult to define, it is easy to spot.
Executive presence is about showing up in such a way that you’re considered “leader-like” in your organization, no matter your title or level. It can look different from organization to organization. To uncover what it could mean in your company, think of someone in your organization that excludes executive presence. What qualities do they possess?
Consider focusing your development in the following areas to increase your executive presence:
1. Confidence
Confidence forms the cornerstone of executive presence. Leaders who exude confidence inspire trust and credibility among their teams and stakeholders. This isn’t just about acting “as-if” but feeling as-if. Confidence is built through trial and error. To develop it, focus on believing in your abilities, decisions, and vision. Stand tall in the face of challenges, recognize your strengths, and be resilient when experiencing setbacks.
2. Authenticity
Sure, here is the revised text:
Being authentic means being yourself and not adopting a persona that doesn’t align with your values. When you are authentic, you create an environment where others feel comfortable being themselves as well. Authenticity begins with being aware of and accepting your true self. It comes from confidence. One way to enhance your awareness is through a self-assessment such as the MBTI or DiSC and asking others for their perspectives.
3. Communication
Effective communication is essential for leaders to convey their ideas, inspire action, influence, and build consensus. To be a better communicator, focus on articulating your thoughts clearly, concisely, persuasively, and confidently.
4. Gravitas
Gravitas is the quality of seriousness, dignity, and substance that commands respect and authority. It makes you stand out in any room; it is developed through experience and built on your expertise and track record of delivering results. To foster gravitas, focus on projecting composure and poise, even in high-pressure situations.
5. Emotional Intelligence
You cannot lead effectively, garner followership, and build strong connections without Emotional intelligence (EQ). EQ is the ability to understand and manage your emotions and those of others. It allows you to navigate interpersonal dynamics, resolve conflicts, and collaborate with stakeholders. To increase your EQ, focus on being an empathetic listener who can read the room, adapt your communication style, and inspire trust and loyalty among your teams.
6. Professionalism
Professionalism encompasses a range of attributes, including integrity, accountability, and a commitment to excellence. To develop your professionalism, focus on being professional in all aspects of your work, from your appearance and demeanor to your interactions with others. Set high standards for yourself and your teams and lead by example to foster a culture of professionalism and accountability.
In corporate leadership, executive presence is not just a desirable trait but a fundamental necessity for success. This intangible quality sets exceptional leaders apart, commanding attention, inspiring confidence, and driving results. It is a multifaceted quality that is not cultivated overnight. As with many leadership soft skills, developing executive presence is a continuous journey of self-awareness, growth, and refinement. By mastering the essentials, you can elevate your effectiveness, influence, and impact, and position yourself for greater career success.
